How Many Generations Have Been in the Universe?

When a star burns, its mostly burning helium and hydrogen. It doesn't convert all that into iron, for example. But the fast burning ones do create metals more quickly than others. So then what does that tell us about how many generations there have been in the universe? We're not a hundred % surer, but the current thinking is that there are roughly three generations.
