The first big crisis that Americans really faced where they had to think about the existential threat of nuclear weapons was the Cuban Missile Crisis in October of 1962. President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev realized what was at stake. But we also got incredibly lucky. We survived a long and very tense struggle with a nuclear armed opponent.
