I like to look at the word performance really holistically and broadly because I believe we all perform various versions of ourselves for various audiences every day, all the time. There are some brilliant academic researchers who have looked into sort of the fraught nature of performing one's selfhood on social media. The layers of labor that go into it are so plentiful. These people have a clear connection to what their online self represents and how to maintain that sense of authenticity that keeps people real in.
