The Evolution of Equity Returns
equity returns are the returns of owning companies or investing as a shareholder. I've looked at some data with my co-authors for very early companies that were created in France in the 1300s. So we've studied one company that stretched the whole time period. It was about 5% real returns between 4% and 5% on top of inflation. And so that's not too far different than what the US has experienced over the last couple of hundred years.
