The Meaning of the Cross

Why did Jesus have to die? What do we make of a word like “atonement,” or of the prophet Isaiah’s phrase, “stricken by God?” Is the notion that Jesus died as a substitute to take on his Abba’s wrath for us really the most faithful way to speak about the cross?
