When you say a string string map, what you're saying is the basic data representation. Instead of being something that had a fixed clear type, it was just like a bag of fields and key value pairs. So you could freely add new fields and take away fields without having to change the format. It makes it harder for people who are using things to know what fields they should be using and how they should be use them.
