The body doesn't know exactly when you're in the VO2 max versus just threshold. There's no such thing as a steady state in training. That version of you is already gone after an hour in a triathlon. You've already started deteriorating. And so my job as your coach is to try or are my job as an athlete is to extend out and say well how what percentage of me at my best can I still bring to bear on that darn marathon?
