It's not so much the current price of a given stock or futures contract that is paramount, but rather knowing at all times the market's volatility. The successful students in the class would be the ones who followed the rules and did not deviate. For those interested in reading chapter five, the following basic Wall Street terms from Wikipedia should be assumed. Most investors go long on an investment hoping that price will rise. To profit from the stock price going down, a short seller can borrow a security and sell it to decrease its value.
