The San Pedro and the San Lucas
The largest of columbus's ships was not even a hundred tons. The smaller the ship, the harder it is to navigate and can't withstand storms or choppy waves. That's part of the reason all four ships are supposed to stay together. To communicate, they have agreed on signals, flags during the day and lanterns during the night. But soon after they set out, very soon after they all set out, the flags and the lanterns become useless.
