Goughman's idea was that everyday life could be understood by reference to the theatre. Theatre gives us an idea of how performance might be organised, he says. In a sense we don't have theatres to do our performance in, we are doing live performance in everyday life, it's more like extemporary theatre. So for example the opening of the curtain is a very significant moment because it tells us we are entering a new realm.
