The Importance of Christian Law in the Roman Empire
Constantine's logic in connection with the churches was that the activities of the clergy were themselves a valuable public office. Wealthy people were not allowed to become clergy. He gave certain judicial powers to bishops, that is, to the church leaders who oversee priests and churches of a region. Thanks to Constantine, bishops could settle civil cases among believers.
