When you started out in your career, you were a lot more focused on very present-day problems like global poverty. EA sort of had a pivot towards long-termism, which is the idea that we should really prioritize positively influencing the long-term future of humanity. I worry that as biotechnology advances and gets cheaper and easier to use, it could get easier for people to design viruses that are worse than COVID-19. These could be done in a military context and could end up leaking out.
