Jeff Yang: I think a better name for what we call AI and machine learning is computational statistics. He was teaching it at Towson University in the late 1970s, he says. And who knew the techniques that he was teaching back then would become known as artificial intelligence and machine learning?Yang: In fact, the deep learning neural network that you hear so much about isn't new. It's a technique to compute functions that perform statistical classification.
