The History of Slavery

Slavery funded the building of many great Victorian country homes that litter England's map. Slave martyrs were brutal and quick to punish, whip and assault labourers. Overwork, poor nutrition, brutality and disease meant that death rates on plantations were high. It wasn't until the end of the 18th century, with the passing of the Amelioration Act, that slave owners were forced to improve living conditions. Before then they simply replaced the dead and dying, with more slaves imported from Africa.
