The first work is a real blow-by-blow of the war. This opium war book is almost a 50-year diplomatic history of the lead-up and spends very little time on the war itself. What I wrote about, since it hadn't been written about in any major way, was sort of the conduct of the war themselves. And with my interest in Zungua Fan and my interest in foreign relations, the period that really loomed largest was the last four years or so of the War.
