The Importance of Canon Weaponry in the Ottoman Empire
The Ottomans had always been good at siege warfare, but they got even better as they adopted gunpowder weaponry on a large scale. By the end of Mourad the second's reign, no state in the world was more adept with or invested in gunpowder weaponry except maybe Charles VII's contemporary France. The cost of creating them and using them was both a reflection of the ability to tax and helped to drive the development of a bureaucracy to make that taxation possible.
