The Conservatism of Understanding
I don't think anybody fully understands what understanding is. We're really not terribly close to an answer to that question, in my opinion. But I do think that you're right to suggest something like a kind of conservatism. The idea that we just can say once and for all, here's what it is for a person to understand a language. Here's what the Chinese room is missing. And here's what you've got. It's early days but there are lots of exciting things about chat GPT.
