How Do You Write a Novel About Fathers in Jail?

And you've stated that in all your novels, you borrow liberally from reality, fictionalizing your own life and the lives of friends and family. I'm wondering if you can talk a little about the reason you have these two really important figures in these books that both have fathers in jail.
