The Multiplication of Meanings in a Text

Most of the history of Christian interpretation has been very comfortable with multiplicity of meanings, multiple levels of meaning. The same text can become the word of God to you, to a community of faith. Sometimes it's an affirmation of something beautiful; sometimes it's calling out and challenging. Some people think if there's not one true perfect right eternal earthadox meaning, then, and it's all debated, then set it aside. But if the text is the site at which we refuse to leave until we've wrestled with it and God has wrestled with us, then it kind of gets at the way a quinish uses literal.
