Psychodelec drugs and other drugs have been involved in avolition of religion. They are thought to trigger the dorphin system, which is an over a activity of the indorphin system that's triggering trance. So they give you a quick and dirty way of getting into what traditiona then described as getting into the spirit world - contact with god or whoever you want to label it.
