When I was in college, I had an affair with a professor 12 years my senior that lasted for four years. He wasn't married, but he had a steady girlfriend with whom he lived. When I realized that I was caught in a cliche that hardly ever ends well, I found the courage to break up with him. But when I did, he uttered the words, you meant nothing to me. Even though I am seven years later, even though I don't have any romantic feelings for him anymore, I still can't get over those words.
