The Republican Party in the Decade Before the Civil War
In the decade before the Civil War it came out of the breakup of the party system which was dominated by the Democrats and the Wigs. The Republican Party emerged around the slogan free soil, free labor, free men. If slavery was allowed to move across the continent, family farms would be impossible. And this was seen as betrayal of the promise of freedom, hence free men.
