The term free thinker or free spirit was often just used to refer to people who have accepted cosmopolitan or modern ideas. The reason why the free spirit is not like those kinds of people is because, well I will read a little section of this where he says, quote, we opposite men,. We think that hardness, forcefulness, slavery, danger in the alley and the heart, life and hiding, stoicism, the art of experiment and devilry of every kind, that everything evil, terrible, tyrannical in man serves the enhancement of the species man as much as its opposite does.
