Producing a single book in the middle ages was a tremendous undertaking. The main good material that europeans had access to was a parchment, which generally had to be made from animal skins. In order to copy over a single bible, one copy of the bible would require killing 300 calves. And so books and documents were cannibalized, erased, re used.
