Dostoyevsky explores the way in which someone who is too timid or weak to confront a rival tends to end up becoming obsessed with that rival. By the end of his novel, golyodkin has become so obsessed with his nemesis that he lands in an asylum. The first lie that every adict tells himself is, i can quit if I want to; they tell that lie because they're ashamed. It's a terrible feeling to be a slave to compulsion of any kind: not far off from being possessed by a demon.
