The Touchstone of Truth and Beauty
There's a strong historical strain in newton, for instance, of believing that the world can be understood because it is the product of a mind. And so in this way, renaissance art and the kind of development of modern science spring out of very much the same impulse. When you have some kind of touchstone, some idea of an absolute or a standard against which things are measured, then you can start to make these tell these stories about the development of art. This is what i want to go into next, as this is vasaris dea, and kind of our ideas about how these notions of divine truth and artistic representation, took hold in antiquity.
