The novel is ostensibly set in the second world war, but it's america's later wars that made it famous. It came out in 19 61, which was just at the casp of America's disastrous war in viet nam. And so i thinkt it became associated, by default, with theviet nam war,. Much like the war that joe depicted in catch 22, had its absurdest aspects.
