The Prayer of Examen Is the Central Spiritual Discipline

Every tradition in church history has an unspoken central spiritual practice. In the Ignatian tradition it's the Prayer of Examen. Gratitude sole purpose is this, it's connecting the gift to the giver. And that tends to be easier with things like scripture and prayer and silence.
