The Importance of Human Connection
Robin Dunbar was trying to calculate the maximum number of people that a human being can both know and care about. His theory is that for the vast majority of human history, coincidentally right up until the Industrial Revolution, most human beings knew and cared about about 150 people. That's it. All of that changed in the 19th century. People will have 9,000 friends now. And you just don't have that much emotional energy. A human being has a limited capacity to care about and have social energy for other people.
