BI 138 Matthew Larkum: The Dendrite Hypothesis

Brain Inspired

CHAPTER

Introduction

This is brain inspired. Are dendrites conceptually useful? That's the title of a recent perspective piece from mathew larkum, whose voice you just heard. Mathew runs his lab at humbolt university of berlin, where his group studies how dendrites contribute to computations within and across layers of the neo cortex. We talk about how the principles derived from dendritic computation might improve deep learning. And toward the end, we discuss a recent thought experiment mathew and a couple of colleagues offered, asking whether action potentials, or more brain activities, cause consciousness.
