Introduction
By-elections can change the course of political history. The Eastborn by-election in 1990 was a factor in the fall of Margaret Thatcher and quite a big factor. Going further back I think the Darlington by- election in 1983 was a result that changed the course of history. These are by-elections with kind of immediate shifts in the potential travel of events. Overall they tell us broadly that the polls are correct, not always the case.
