"I can speak to the actual feeling of being pretty sure you have monkey pox, but being denied testing for seven days," she says. "Our queer community is most affected... 95 to 90 % of cases right now are in queer people, gay men and our larger sexual network." She's working with clinicians, epidemiologists, other scientists, community health people who have been doing this work her whole lives.
Gay men, queer people, and their partners represent an overwhelming majority of monkeypox cases. But even though the WHO just declared the disease a global health emergency, resources like vaccines, testing, and treatment remain largely out of reach.
