The Importance of Prudence in Economics
Kant made a distinction in his ethics between matters that were governed by universal maxims and those derived from some formulation of the categorical imperative. So if I notice that it is very cold outside, I should probably give my daughter warm clothes before she goes outside to play. That's kindness, but it's situationally relative. If I bundle her up in a warm coat when it's in the middle of the summer, she's not going to be having fun. And so that's not a kindness that's actually kind of foolish. But on the other hand, there are councils of Prudence that depending on certain circumstances, depending on the situations you observe around you, you will act differently
