The Evolution of ADHD
The diagnosis is a clinical one by the trajectory of symptoms over time. Primary care physicians in particular may say, well, let's send them for neuropsychological testing and then we'll be able to sort out whether they have ADHD or not. That's an expensive process, not often covered by insurance companies and can cost thousands of dollars. But if the neuropsych testing comes back equivalent or ambivalent to normal, you're still left with the clinical history that's more consistent with the diagnosis.
