The Importance of Resistance in Transference
The concept of transference at once destroys faith in personal relations and explains why they are tragic. We cannot know each other through a dense thicket of absent others. A horrible kind of predestination hovers over each new attachment we form. The outcome isn't saving a soul per se, it's alleviating symptoms. It's making them have a different relationship with their relationships.
