When Estime was overthrown by a military junta, Duvalier went into hiding. But he didn't have to wait too long: the new president of Haiti was again overthrown in an army coup in 1956. So elections were called and Francois Duvalier announced his run for president as a champion of the impoverished black majority of Haiti.
