The rule of thirds, the sweet spots rule of thirds is a very simplistic technique for placing a focal point. You don't want to put your focal point right at the edge of a canvas because then you're leading the viewers I there and then they go out to the next painting. The great thing about these preparatory sketches whether we're talking about on paper or with black and white oil paint is it's a conversation back and forth between that value study and the subject.
