The Importance of Internal Load

I think slowly but surely people are realising that a four mile run is not the same for people with two very different capacities. And you also need to take into account at any point in time your ability to handle load or your load capacity is influenced by a number of contextual factors. You haven't lost strength, you haven't lost fitness, but due to contextual factors or due to changes in health, your capacity may have changed. There's other pieces that fit together that add to ultimately improving performance.
