A careful history of the patient's relationships is more likely to permit the clinition to appreciate what is emotionally important. Clinician needs a theoretical approach to organize and make sense of the data. We need to ask patients for concrete examples to illustrate the generalizations patients often make about the relationships. What a patient describes as positive in a relationship may not seem as positive to the interviewer.
