Oswald had been nicknamed Aussie Rabbit after the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit. He kept advocating Marxist ideas to his fellow Marines, which was not a very popular thing to do in the American armed forces during the McCarthy era. Just three years later, at age 19, he got out of the Marine Corps.
