Joyce's Dantian Model
Dante's first work, the Vitanwova, is a collection of poems with commentary that he wrote as a youth in praise of a girl named Beatrice Portinari. Dante takes us to hell and shows us the people of Florence there. Joyce reverses this idea: He depicts hell as Dublin. As Dante and Virgil wander through hell looking at souls bound to their little circles, so too do Stephen and Bloom wander through Dublin.
