The Nightland by William Hope Hodgson

The boats of Glenn Carrick by William Hope Hodgson is a strange sailor's story. In the novel, sailors encounter other ships that have been brought in and drift towards what seems to be an island. Once they get on the island, the sailors begin to encounter other beings. Perhaps the squid monsters are traveling underneath the island and subterranean caverns and attacking the fortified residents of the sailors.
