Mediaeval england continued to be a deeply poetic and literary society, as it had been back in the six hundreds. And there was a great tradition of anglo saxon verse, mostly rhythmic and alliterative verse. A lot of these poems, especially the most famous ones, describe grief, certainty, anxiety at movement, at loss of home, loss of hearth, loss of belonging.
