What Are Your Thoughts on the Future of Social Media?

I'm a long-term, optimist but short-term pessimist. And software in general has changed the world entirely in very short period of time. But it's hard to reconcile or square that circle with what you feel short-term on those things. You know, I just recently tried to get off Twitter for and you quickly find yourself in a situation where where do I get my news these days? How do you do that? RSS is still around, but no one's using it the same way.
