The Equitener's Spines Provide Good Insulation

The West Australian equiteners can use their spines as thermal windows to dissipate heat. They also have areas that are not spiny, so their ventral surface in the inside of their legs don't have spines. The study found they were active and happy at temperatures 2.5 degrees above their supposedly-thole limits. This is really surprising considering their broad distribution and some other research coming out of Queensland. Next week's Inside Science will look at how a kidney regulates its own temperature.
