The only way that it can be defensively solid is if your fullbacks are impossibly athletic and you can just cover the entire width of the field. But if you drop your fullbacks back, then how where are the players getting into the box and getting into the wide areas need to push somebody else forward. That is the logic by which you start to get more of these free aid systems.
