Autism Spectrum Disorders and Reciprocity

People on the autism spectrum experience difficulties with both receptive and expressive communication. Receptive communication includes making sense of others a spoken language, their body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. An expressive communication is given to another person through using language and nonverbal behaviours to make yourself understood. So having both difficulties leads to the difficulties with reciprocity that people on the spectrum are known to have. These problems with reciprocity range from an atypical social approach, a failure of the normal back and forth conversation, to reduce sharing of interests, emotions or effect.
