Ancient Greece Was Not the Beginnings of Things

Ancient greece was not the beginnings of modern society. It stretches back way before that, to the societies of mesopotamia. The phoenicians were the trade masters of the mediterranean long before the greeks came along. I don't really believe that there would have been a lot of literacy in the greek speaking world at all. There's not a lot of evidence to say that literacy among the population would have existed at all.
