Flaubert's Madame Bovary

Flaubert used Polybius heavily in writing Salambo. It's set in 239 BC in a place Carthage which had just been erased by the victors, by the Romans. And he doesn't even pick the moment most people pick with the Carthaginian story. He picks this much less known mercenary war after the first Punic war.
