The Role of Women in Attica

The most important role played by women in the public sphere was in religion as priestesses. About 40 of Athens' priesthoods were in the hands of upper class women. Women could attend births and marriages, and they played a major role in funeral rituals. Despite their political participation, some Athenian women do not seem to have involved themselves in public affairs.
